What is Graze Days?  Graze Days is a 3-5 year restoration project which kicked off during the 2019 Earth Day Celebration in the Railyard Park. Through a partnership with Railyard Park ConservancyQuivira Coalition, and the City of Santa Fe, Graze Days was implemented to improve the health of the soil and the native blue grama grasses in the Railyard Park. A herd of 60-70 sheep and goats will be employed to eat invasive weeds and add necessary nutrients back into the soil.

How Does it Work?  Goats and sheep are extremely efficient weeders, as they can eat 25% of their own body weight in vegetation in just one day. As they munch on the unwanted invasive plants, their hooves aerate the soil and nutrient rich droppings improve the soil health. The animals will spend each day grazing, and a moveable, solar-powered electric fence will be used to ensure that the herding animals can focus on one section at a time. For those wanting to learn more, experts from Quivira Coalition will be on-site to answer questions and speak to the many benefits of prescribed grazing.
